Guidelines for Board Membership
Membership on the board of a non-profit organization is an important responsibility, for the health and vitality of the organization depends heavily on the energy and enthusiasm of its board of directors. As a mostly-volunteer non-profit organization, Story Circle Network relies on its directors not only for guidance and good ideas, but for help in implementing those ideas.
SCN board members must identify as women or nonbinary. They need not be members of Story Circle Network, but members are given preference, especially those who have volunteered to facilitate or participate in some of SCN’s program areas: writing Circles, conferences (as a presenter or volunteer), judging for a writing contest or Sarton/Gilda book award, reviewing for Story Circle Book Reviews, presenting a webinar or online class, or volunteering or participating in another way.
If you join us, we are committed to making your experience as a board member a time of learning and personal growth.
As a member of the Story Circle Network board, you will be asked to pledge to help us in the following ways:
- Make a commitment to support and further the continued development of Story Circle’s mission and purpose.
- Agree to serve the term to which you are appointed. (A full term is 2 years. However, some directors may be appointed to fill an uncompleted term.)
- Attend at least three of the four board meetings per year, via teleconference or email, preparing for the meetings by reviewing all pre-board meeting materials.
- Serve on at least one board workgroup and promptly carry out any activities you volunteer to undertake.
- Board members are encouraged to attend SCN activities (i.e., conferences or retreats) as board representatives.
- Regularly reassess your commitment to SCN and participate in annual board evaluations. If you find it difficult to fulfill your responsibilities to the board, please discuss your concerns with the president.
