Journaling into Winter and the New Year

January 15, 2024 by Francesca Aniballi Leave a Comment

Midwinter is a gate, a portal to a new dimension where we can find hidden gold in the stillness and warm evenings with our loved ones, be they people or pets.

We can also find shelter in our inner sanctuary if we are still and allow time for rest.

At this time of the year, I love giving myself the gift of reflection and contemplation.

When the festive meal is over, and my table is still dressed with reds and greens, I close outside demands behind my door and tune into myself.

I brew a spiced, scented tea, such as cinnamon and apple tea, sit down at my desk, open my journal and ask myself:

"What do I need right now?"

I listen for a few moments and jot down what comes to mind. I listen to my body, heart, and intuition.

Then I write the question:

"What do I have to release?"

The answer to this usually comes quickly and with relief: it is good to clear my energy and allow space for what is to unfold next.

Finally, I write:

"What do I celebrate?"

I revel in the joy of treasure hunting for memorable moments throughout my year.

These three questions accompany me through the Midwinter gate and ease my passage into the new.

I allow for little pockets of time during this season almost every day. It may be five or fifteen minutes, you get the idea. I certainly do so between December 20 and December 25, and then again on New Year's Eve.

In January, I always start writing in a new journal that I select carefully and turn a new leaf in my life.

Acknowledging this moment is essential.

Outside, the air may be crisp and chilly, it may be sunny or frosty, or it may snow or rain but inside, my heart is alive with a crackling fire, where my soul and Spirit meet and dance.

I am Italian by birth, but English is my elective language when it comes to writing and reading. It is the language that opens up my imagination. After living in Scotland for years, I relocated in the Italian countryside, where I teach and write contentedly.
