Class synopsisMaya Angelou said "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have....too often creativity is smothered rather than nurtured. There has to be a climate in which ways of thinking, perceiving, questioning are encouraged." This class will provide a nurturing circle for you to explore your writing in the company of other supportive women writers.
Through writing exercises, reading, studying published essay writers, and exchanging supportive feedback, this class will help your essays to come alive.
To develop confidence, patience, and personal goals with your writing practice, enrich and expand your writing skills, and strengthen your ability to self-edit and offer constructive feedback to others
Class communication methodYou will be emailed published essays and articles on the craft of writing each week before class. You will have a weekly writing partner to exchange writing with for constructive and supportive feedback. You are welcome to send your writing to me as your instructor, weekly, (up to 750 words), for supportive comments. Zoom class meetings are on WEDNESDAYS for the following dates: Jan 11, Jan 18, Jan 25, no class Feb 1, classes resume: Feb 8, Feb 15, Feb 22. 1-2:30 Eastern Standard Time.
Instructor will email readings, and supportive feedback on your writing, before each class meeting.
Class 1 – Discussion regarding the elements of a supportive writing environment, your personal writing goals, class writing exercises, and review of craft teachings and published essays, Each class will assign writing partners for the consecutive class.
Class 2 – Review Pre-Readings, Writing Exercises-Transport what you mean to the written word, Review student writing and discuss.
Class 3 – Review Pre-Readings, Writing Exercises-Writing “Conversationally-Speak To Your Reader. Review student writing and discuss.
Class 4 – Review Pre-Readings, Writing Exercises-Filtering down to the “essence” of your story- What to leave in? What to take out?, Review student writing and discuss.
Class 5 – Review Pre-Readings, Writing Exercises-Sensory & Metaphor Enrich Your Writing, Review student writing and discuss.
Class 6 – Review Pre-Readings, Writing Exercises-Review your writing goals, Review Craft Teachings and Personal Essays, Sharing writing with others.
Class time commitment60-90 minutes per week, including reading essays and writing craft articles, working on your own essays, and reading and reviewing others' essays.
Dr. Lisa Baron is a writer, teacher, therapist, and mentor. Her writing appears in multiple publications including Women In Higher Education, The New Social Worker, Natural Awakenings, and Real Women Write: Beyond Covid: Leaning Into Tomorrow – published by Story Circle Network. She is in the process of writing a book with two other authors on conversations we have with our “younger selves.” This is the fourth-class Lisa will be teaching for Story Circle Network.
