Class description
This workshop is an interactive and experiential workshop to explore the use of sexual scenes and imagery in creative writing milieux. It includes adult materials but is not focused on pornography or even erotica - rather, the uses of sexual language and behaviors to enhance theme, plot development, character development, mood/emotion, etc. in story. Curated readings and an optional writing exercise will be included.

To share my knowledge about sexuality as it pertains to creative writing
To raise awareness of the purposes of sexual scenes and the importance of language in enhancing the elements of story
To share my reading and writing experience with and learn more about the Story Circle community

This class will help you to:
Gain increased comfort with discussing sexuality and sexual scenes in creative writing
Learn tools for evaluating the relative success of a sexual scene in advancing the goals of a piece of writing
Experiment with using these tools to craft and critique one’s own as well as others’ writing about sex

Lynda Smith Hoggan is Professor Emeritus of Health and Human Sexuality. Her book Our Song: a Memoir of Love and Race, published by She Writes Press, has earned two Silver Medals. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Westwind UCLA Journal of the Arts, and the anthology Art in the Time of Unbearable Crisis. Her blog post “What the Stars See” was awarded First Place by Story Circle Network.
