Class synopsis
Learn the fundamentals of the creative nonfiction genre. Over four weeks, we’ll use weekly readings and writing prompts to study what makes successful creative nonfiction essays tick and how to produce your own essays in this genre. Let’s create some creative nonfiction together! Receive feedback from your instructor and peers.Class description
Topics include: Exploring the forms and boundaries of the creative nonfiction genre; brainstorming for writable ideas,; plotting your story structure; conducting research; and bringing it all together with effective writing craft. Expect to write 2-3 pages weekly for in-class discussion. At conclusion of the workshop, participants may submit up to 1500 words for instructor feedback.

Class communication method
The instruction method is four Zoom meetings, plus participation in discussion and exchanging submissions for review on Group.io. The Zoom class sessions are recorded so if you miss one, you can still keep up with the class.Class outline
“Dive Into Creative Nonfiction” consists of 4 weekly units.
Week 1: Introduction: What is creative nonfiction? The (semi)breakable rules, forms, and methods.
Week 2: Nonfiction: Finding writable stories, writing craft skills
Week 3: How do journalists research a story? People, Places, Paper
Week 4: Review, remix, revise: Shaping your work for publication
Class time commitment
2 hours for weekly Zoom meeting + 2-5 hours for homework. The workshop sessions take place on Thursday mornings, 10-12pm Central.Instructor bio
Sarah White is an author, ghostwriter, memoir writing coach, and teacher of business skills for personal historians. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and an MFA in creative nonfiction.
