Week one: We will kick things off on January 14, 2023. We will meet on Zoom, get to know each other, and we’ll engage in a simple group meditation and writing assignment. The focus of our first meeting will be to cultivate a new/renewed mind-body connection with our creative process.
Week two: Optional Zoom office hours. All students will receive an email with a video or audio meditation and a corresponding writing assignment that will be due three days later via email. Jen will provide an optional reading and links to resources. This week’s theme is writing what scares us.
Week three: Optional Zoom office hours. Like the previous weeks, there will be an audio or video meditation and corresponding prompt that is focused on creating more clarity and confidence in our writing. One short reading will be provided for motivation.
Week four: This is our final Zoom meeting (same time, same link)! In this class, we will do a final group meditation that goes deeper into visualization. We will discuss how to integrate mind-body practices into our writing routines (realistically), and we will have a chance to share work we’ve written in a final open mic online.
Class time commitment1.5-2 hours of writing and approximately 30 minutes of reading each week will be required.
Jen was a high school dropout who went on to find purpose through writing, which led her to earn a BA in English from Otterbein University (cum laude) and an MFA from Bennington College. Now, her short fiction and creative nonfiction are taught in classrooms and appear in over a hundred publications around the world, including The Best Small Fictions (edited by Amy Hempel), Chicago Tribune, Chicago Quarterly Review, Room Magazine, and The Saturday Evening Post. Her collections include The Glass City (Prize Americana winner), Resolutions (AUX Media), and After the Gazebo (a Pen/Faulkner nominee). Jen’s chapbook of flash fiction, Dandelion Ghosts, was released in 2021, and she is currently working on a craft book about how to write compelling fiction.
Jen’s first novel, We Arrive Uninvited, is one of the top-rated projects of all time on Coverfly’s Red List for family stories. It won the Steel Toe Books Award in Prose and will be released in Spring 2023.
After teaching creative writing for over a decade, Jen began to coach writers 1:1 and offer idea-to-publication services through Unleash Creatives, a holistic arts organization she founded and co-owns.
