Beyond COVID: Leaning Into Tomorrow
Prose and Poetry from Story Circle Network
Beyond COVID: Leaning Into Tomorrow is Volume 20 of the Real Women Write anthology series of prose and poetry by members of Story Circle Network, an organization supporting women writers and asserting the importance of women’s stories.
In 2021, while COVID is still with us, there are vaccines, and better treatments. The pandemic struggle has become familiar and we have much more knowledge about it. Social divisions are unresolved, but there’s also dialogue. Once again we can imagine a future. As SCN founder Susan Wittig Albert suggested, we’re “Dreaming of good times to come (with all of the ambiguities and uncertainties that go into that).”
This issue of Real Women Write will explore women’s visions of what’s to come after COVID. Those visions will shape how we move forward. Susan noted, “It often seems too many people find it easiest to believe that going forward means going back to the good times we had before.” But we’ve seen the division and injustice in our society, and we can’t unsee it. We’ve seen the destruction of increasing climate change, and it won’t be ignored. How will our lives look when the world has recovered from COVID-19? Beyond “roses and rainbows,” what visions do we have for what comes after all the catastrophes of 2020? What do we imagine with longing, envision with excitement, or anticipate with anxiety in the years ahead?
These are the questions we will address in Beyond COVID: Leaning Into Tomorrow. Together, the answers proposed by the included authors will provide ideas and inspiration as we work to reimagine and rebuild our lives after the pandemic.
Christina Baldwin will provide an insightful Foreword to this edition. She is the author of nine books, including a classic on personal writing—Life’s Companion, Journal Writing as a Spiritual Practice. She is also a remarkable “teacher on the trail of community and story,” being co-founder with Ann Linnea of PeerSpirit, Inc. and The Circle Way Process.
Beyond COVID: Leaning Into Tomorrow will be a strong addition to the literature and herstory of 21st century women as we endure and evolve through a remarkable time. Order your copy from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or your favorite bookstore in December 2021.
We are open for entries July 1 – September 15, and up to three entries may be submitted, by SCN members only. There is no entry fee, but length is limited to 1400 words for prose, or 48 lines for poetry.
