"I have a duty to speak the truth as I see it and share not just my triumphs, not just the things that felt good, but the pain, the intense, often unmitigated pain. It is important to share how I know survival is survival and not just a walk through the rain."
--Audre Lorde

"The idea that we should avoid pain no matter what is crazy, because it separates us from the experience of the sacred. We are often in touch with the deepest part of ourselves through pain."
--Isabel Allende

"Give sorrow words."
--William Shakespeare

In a Time of Grief:

September 11, 2001, was the day America changed. In this historic time of national grief, each of us felt a terrible pain and we all sought various ways to deal with it. Some of us gave blood, or contributed financially to families who lost loved ones, but many of us felt helpless, not sure what we could do to heal ourselves, help others heal, and honor those who died so tragically.

Giving Words to Our Sorrow:

But we have found a way. Believing that writing can help to heal trauma and loss, we have given words to our sorrow. Many people have contributed their stories to this archive: stories about what we witnessed on September 11, either on the scene or on television; stories about how we felt, either at the time of the tragedy or as the long days unfolded; stories that honor the memory of those we have lost and pay tribute to their lives. You can read these stories in this archive, and share with the writers their loss and grief.

A New Invitation:

Now, a year after these events, we are still seeking to understand, and to give words to our understanding. We invite you to be a part of this continuing dialogue. We invite you to write about the ways your life has been changed by what happened almost a year ago. Have you changed the way you live, work, travel, and relate to others and to the communities of which you are a part? Have there been inner changes, to mirror the outer? Do you feel differently about the world and your place in it?

How to Contribute:

Near the bottom of this page you will find an invitation to share your story on this website, on special pages dedicated to the collection and preservation of our individual and national experience at this time of great trial. We hope that you will join us in our individual and collective effort to make sense out of what has happened, to redeem our anger, and to place our individual experiences in the context of a larger hope for peace and justice in an imperfect world.

An Invitation to Share:

If you would like to tell us how your life has been changed by the events of September 11, 2001, we invite you to send us your stories, via this online form (or via email --no attachments, please-- to sorrow@storycircle.org). We can publish stories up to 1000 words, each on its own separate page. Please include your name and give your story a title that we can use as a link to your writing. When your story has been posted, we will send you the location of the page so that you can ask family and friends to read it, if you wish. If you have already contributed your experiences of September 11, we will publish your new story with the earlier piece. (Scroll farther down this page to see a list of those stories that we have already posted.)

We welcome stories from women and men, children and adults. However, we cannot accept any post that expresses hate toward ethnic, racial, or religious groups, or is primarily a partisan political statement.
