Beyond the Sky and the Earth

Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan
by Jamie Zeppa

  1. Why do you think that Zeppa chose to go to Bhutan? What were her conscious reasons and what might have been her less conscious motivations?

  2. How does Zeppa move from "Arrival" to "Entrance": what does she mean by this and what are some of the contributing experiences?

  3. What is meant by her reoccurring statement: "Wherever you go, there you are?" What is she trying to deal with by reminding herself of this?

  4. What are some of the differences in worldview, role of individual & community, social rules, etc. that between Bhutanese society and that of N. America? Which ones present particular struggles for her?

  5. Do you agree that she moves from a position of idealization to disillusionment to a balanced reality re Bhutan? How does this happen and what are some of the contributing experiences? Did you as a reader also go thru this process and at some point "fall in love" with the place?

  6. What are some of the "lessons" of Buddhism that present particular difficulties for her? Does it make sense to you that she considers herself a Buddhist by the end of the book?

  7. What reactions did you have to her relationship with Tshewang? How do you understand her love and attachment to him? (do you see this being permanent?)

  8. Do you agree with the statement that "anyone can live anywhere?"
