Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan
by Jamie Zeppa
- Why do you think that Zeppa chose to go to Bhutan? What were her
conscious reasons and what might have been her less conscious motivations?
- How does Zeppa move from "Arrival" to "Entrance": what does she mean
by this and what are some of the contributing experiences?
- What is meant by her reoccurring statement: "Wherever you go, there
you are?" What is she trying to deal with by reminding herself of this?
- What are some of the differences in worldview, role of individual &
community, social rules, etc. that between Bhutanese society and that of
N. America? Which ones present particular struggles for her?
- Do you agree that she moves from a position of idealization to
disillusionment to a balanced reality re Bhutan? How does this happen
and what are some of the contributing experiences? Did you as a reader
also go thru this process and at some point "fall in love" with the place?
- What are some of the "lessons" of Buddhism that present particular
difficulties for her? Does it make sense to you that she considers
herself a Buddhist by the end of the book?
- What reactions did you have to her relationship with Tshewang? How do
you understand her love and attachment to him? (do you see this being
permanent?)
- Do you agree with the statement that "anyone can live anywhere?"
