"The most important thing one woman can do for another is to illuminate and expand her sense of actual possibilities."
—Adrienne Rich
What is it?
The Reading Circle is a series of monthly book discussion groups for women in the Austin, TX area. The Circle has been meeting since March, 1998 and facilitation rotates among group members. The group chooses the books (womens memoirs and autobiographies). We welcome new members.
The group meets on the 2nd Monday of the month from 12-1pm. We will meet at the following location on the following dates:
- January, 2010: Central Market, 4001 N Lamar, in their community room.
- February, 2010: no meeting, due to our national conference
- March-December, 2010: stay tuned; most likely we will meet at Central Market, but we can only reserve the room one month in advance... Come back to this page in early February for more info...
While participation in all Austin-Area Story Circle groups is free, we do ask that you make a six-month commitment to the Reading Circle, so that the group will be fairly stable. The Circle is limited to about 15 people, so that everyone can participate fully in the discussion.
What books will we read?
We choose books about women's lives (memoirs, autobiographies, biographies, and fiction) that are available in paperback in local bookstores (such as BookWoman, Book People, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc.). We've made it easy for you to purchase books through this web-site. We are linked to amazon.com, and a portion of the purchase price is returned to Story Circle. Through our book choices, we hope to introduce you to writers and books you might not otherwise have read. (That is, we don't usually choose best-sellers.)
You will find links to our book lists below.
You might find our A Reader's Journal helpful in recording your thoughts as you read.
