Fish Out of Water, by Martha Slavin of Danville CA
Papayas, Mangoes, and Arepa con Huevo, by Maya Lazarus of Caldwell TX

Congratulations to our winners!

In this Reflections competition, SCN members were invited to write personal, experienced-based essays on this topic:

Leaving Home. Home is an emotionally packed word, powered by heart-felt memories. Think about the first time you left home. Some of us married and started our own homes, others went off to college or entered the military, and still others set off to find a job and become independent career-minded women. Whatever the reason, leaving home marked an important transition from what we were to who we were becoming.

In an essay of no more than 1200 words, tell us about leaving home for the first time. What did you take with you, what did you leave behind? How did leaving home change you? What did you learn about yourself? What did you learn about the meaning of home?

The winners receive cash prizes. Their essays are published in the SCN Journal and online. Click on the links above to read the winning essays.
