Quilt of Barns (Lori Gravley)
| |
(click for detailed view)
8x10' Art Quilt of Barns in the complimentary colors of blue and orange. This realistic representation uses a more imaginative color scheme, inverting the blue of the sky onto the barn and filling the sky with the warm colors of an Indian Summer Sunset.

Though Lori Gravley has an MFA in writing, When the toddlerhood of her second son left her with little time to think, a weaving loom in chaos, and a broken spinning wheel, she picked up the quilt she started when she was pregnant and began to write her "letters to the world" in fabric and thread. She has exhibited nationally in quilt shows and art galleries. Find out more about her and her work on her blog.

As if it Didn't Happen (Maggie Claire)
| |
A memoir of abuse, multiple personalities and hope. 350 pages, soft cover, available through Lulu.com.

I am a mother of 6 children, registered nurse, grandmother of 4, writer, and survivor of horrible sexual abuse which lasted for 15 years. I have grown through my writings, participation in SCN and through war, mothering and working in the state mental hospital. I survived because I was able to create other people in my mind and said, "It didn't happen to me, it happened to her."

Rosie's Daughters: The "First Woman To" Generation Tells Its Story; Rosie's Bandana; Rosie's Mug (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
Meet Rosie's Daughters...The breakthrough collective memoir about the generation of women that broke through centuries of limitations to take their place in the world. They were born during World War II and came of age in the 60s...both shaped by and an influencer of their times. These precursors of the baby boomers achieved more "firsts" than any group of women before or since, earning them the name of "First Woman To" Generation.
Matilda Butler and Kendra Bonnett teach and coach writers, develop memoir-writing workshops and training materials, publish the Women's Memoirs website and even find time to write.
| |
Authors Matilda Butler and Kendra Bonnett have rewritten the rules for book design. They push beyond conventional format to give the first person stories of the more than 100 women interviewed a multidimensional context within the historical narrative that spans six decades of change- social, cultural, economic and political. It's a feast for mind and eye. Autographed and personalized for you at Stories from the Heart Conference.
Rosie's Bandana: We've also included our Rosie's Bandana—a generous 27 inch square so you can tie it just like Rosie did, or wear it around your neck, or as a head scarf. Designed by Matilda and Kendra, we offer the only authentic Rosie the Riveter bandana and include the message, We Can Do It...Pass It On. Woven and printed in the USA.
Rosie didn't have her own mug, but we think she would like ours. We modeled it on her bandana with a message that honors her strength, courage and sense of empowerment.

The [Essential] Women's Memoir Writing Workshop on DVD (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
Take our Women's Memoir Writing class in the comfort of your home and at your own pace. Go back and replay a section as often as you like. We've been conducting our memoir writing workshops for four years. We get such positive feedback that we know how helpful they are. The only drawback is that you have to be local to take them. No longer. We've video recorded one of the classes and combined that material with the extensive PowerPoint slides we use in the class. We've integrated the two, added new writing exercises and created 21 separate lessons. All the lessons are available in this 5 DVD set. In addition, we've added our extensive workbook to the DVD.
Matilda Butler and Kendra Bonnett met in 1979 while working on the Women's Educational Equity Communication Network, a national information program. Thirty years later, still friends and still working together, they are the duo behind Women's Memoirs. Between them, they have written, co-authored or ghostwritten 10 books and hundreds of magazine and journal articles. They've brought their knowledge of writing and their interest in women's issues to their teaching of memoir writing. They recently posted a video entitled The #1 Secret to Writing an Effective Memoir on YouTube.

Memoir Journal (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
Women's Memoirs has this beautiful journal made in Thailand to our specifications, featuring silk dyed and woven for us. Our friend, Erin, lived in California for many years before pursuing her lifelong dream of living abroad. She resides now in Chiang Mai, home of Thailand's handcraft community. Erin visited the women who dye and weave Thai silk. She chose colors and patterns designed to bring beauty and pleasure to us each time we reach for the journal to write about our life.
| |
Nurturing the silk worms, harvesting the cocoons, unrolling the cocoon's silk thread, dying the silk and weaving is a lengthy process that requires patience—much the way that writing a memoir is a lengthy process. We hope you'll honor the patience involved in your storytelling experience when you use this beautiful journal.
[Note: Our journal comes with a standard composition book that is easily replaced at any office supply store. This way you can enjoy using your Thai silk cover over and over.]

Butterfly Silk Pillow (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
Butterflies represent change, growth, and beauty. Besides, what could be more fun than an animal that smells with its antenna and tastes with its feet? This unique Women's Memoirs hand-painted silk butterfly pillow is designed to help your imagination take flight. Tuck it behind your back while you work on your memoir or put it in a chair across the room to remind you that "if nothing ever changed, there'd be no butterflies." We've even put a bit of organic lavender and roses inside to bring you joy and success.
| |
Our pillows are designed and made exclusively for Women's Memoirs by Troye who began painting on silk 11 years ago. We think you'll like her philosophy as much as we know you'll love her pillows. She says, "I believe art is not only a form of self-expression, it's an invitation for the viewer to participate in a conversation. I'm thrilled to think of each viewer creating new meaning where I have left off." Similarly, memoirists write for themselves but anticipate the impact on a reader who may perceive new meaning in her own life experiences.

Rosemary Tea Mug and Tea of Refreshing Memories (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
This mug says "Rosemary for Remembrance ... Remembering and Telling My Story."
The design, created for Women's Memoirs by our friend Suzanne Pingree, depicts a garland of flowering rosemary wrapped around the mug with its message of memory.
| |
Sip a cup of our exclusive Tea of Refreshing Memories, while you commune with your memoir. We buy all organic ingredients from one of the few female bulk-tea purveyors in the US and have developed our own formulas. Tea of Refreshing Memories is a blend of organic mint and premium green Unfolding Tea with a hint of rosemary. Our tasting panel gave their thumbs up to the piquant blend. ¼ pound, approximately 50 cups.

Memoir Garden Tea Mug and Tea of Joy (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
This mug says "A Garden of Memories ... I am the Gardener." For this Women's Memoirs exclusive design, our friend Suzanne Pingree drew herbs that we've planted in our Memoir Garden. She chose ten with messages to inspire your creative work.
| |
You'll find angelica for inspiration, chamomile for patience, lavender for joy, lemon balm for comfort, lemon verbena for confidence, mint for eternal refreshment, nasturtium for optimism, oregano for substance, rose for success, and of course, a sprig of rosemary for remembrance.
Enjoy the message while you sip a cup of our specially formulated Tea of Joy for a taste that adds a touch of sweet perfume with citrusy notes. We wanted a tea that would bring joy when your writing, or your life in general, isn't going as well as you'd like.
With the help of a tasting panel of family and friends, we developed a mixture of our organic green Unfolding Tea with a hint of organic lavender blossoms. The result, Tea of Joy, has all the benefits of our lovely green tea combined with a lift in your mood. A joy to drink. ¼ pound, approximately 50 cups.

Mindfulness Soap (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
Two creative women, Jessicca and Melanie, began making soaps 5 years ago. They taught themselves to make soap the way their grandmothers and great-grandmothers would have. However, Jessicca and Melanie use high quality ingredients that weren't available in rural America—non-gmo olive oil and other all-natural vegetable oils, essential oils, and organic herbs. They combine these ingredients in small batches and use the cold process method of soap making, pouring the mixture into small wooden molds they made themselves. After 24 hours the soap is cut. Jessicca then hand bevels each edge and puts the bars on drying racks to cure for 4 to 6 weeks, resulting in firm, mild, long-lasting, satisfying soaps.
| |
Soap making and memoir writing are similar creative efforts. Jessicca says, "soap making is a long process that requires patience and a sense of humor, but the resulting soap is worth the effort." We feel the same way about memoir writing—that's why in our soap there's rosemary for mental alertness and lavender buds for the joy that contribute to a mindful state as we write our memoirs.
Enjoy our Mindfulness Soap, a special blend of organic rosemary and lavender buds, made just for Women's Memoirs by Jessicca. An oversized bar at 7.5 ounces.

Three Tea Combo (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
Kendra and I have put together three delightful teas for you. Each is designed to nourish you and your writing.
Unfolding Tea: High on the lofty mountains of Sri Lanka grows the green tea we've chosen. Small tea leaves are picked, rolled into tiny balls, and dried. When you pour hot water over them, you'll see them unfold just as your story unfolds in your memoir.
| |
Tea of Wisdom and Success: This delightfully fragrant herbal tea blend came about by accident. Some of the best things happen this way. A neighbor returned from China with a lovely container of dried rose buds for me. Hum. I combined a few rose buds with some of our organic dried mint. Wow. The fragrance delights the sense of smell while the mint tingles on the tongue. An instant success. Then I contacted our tea purveyor and she said she could get organic rose buds for me along with more of the organic mint. We call this our Tea of Wisdom and Success—two elements we need in telling and finishing our memoir. In the ancient language of herbs, each herb has several complimentary meanings. We've chosen "wisdom" as the definition of rose and "success" as the definition of mint.
Unfolding Success Tea: As you might guess, the third tea in this combo is a blend of our green Unfolding Tea and the Success (organic roses) portion of our Wisdom and Success Tea. It brings you the antioxidants of green tea and the lovely scent of our rosebuds. Sip this tea as your life story unfolds and you make progress toward successful memoir writing.
Each bag is ¼ pound, approximately 50 cups for a total of 150 cups each.
Note: Women's Memoirs teas are purchased from estates participating in the Ethical Tea Partnership that supports fair living and working conditions.

Stories from the Heart Tea (Kendra Bonnett, Matilda Butler)
| |
Our wonderful tea purveyor located another perfect tea for Women's Memoirs. She recently introduced us to compressed tea. In Yunnan, the finest green tea leaves are streamed and pressed into heart-shaped forms before drying. Place a heart in your cup or mug, add hot water, enjoy the liquid amber color and sip the smooth tasting tea. This is the perfect drink while you write the stories from your heart. ¼ pound, approximately 35 hearts.

Colorado Byways (Susan J. Tweit)
| |
Susan J. Tweit's memoir, Walking Nature Home, has been called "lovely, brave, inspiring" and "a must read." She's the author of eleven other books that draw on her life experiences in one way or another, along with hundreds of articles and essays for magazines and newspapers ranging from Fine Gardening and Popular Mechanics to Audubon and the Los Angeles Times. She calls Colorado Scenic Byways her "love poem" to her adopted state.
| |
Inspired by a quintessentially American love, the lure of the open road, Colorado Scenic Byways explores the state through the words of award-winning writer Susan J. Tweit and the lens of an nationally published photographer Jim Steinberg. This two-book set takes readers on a journey through Colorado via the state's 25 designated scenic byways, from the sea of grass covering the Plains, to the state's iconic peaks and valleys, and its largely unknown West Slope, a landscape of vividly colored mesas and canyons.
The book is actually two oversized, lavishly illustrated books in a slip-case: a coffeetable book that delivers the essence of the byways in full-page photos and lyric essays paired with a road atlas to travel with you as you explore.
Colorado Scenic Byways won the Colorado Book Award and was named ForeWord Magazine Travel Book of the year.

Barren, Wild, and Worthless (Susan J. Tweit)
| |
Appearing barren and most definitely wild, the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States may look worthless to some, but for Susan J. Tweit it is an inspiration. In this collection of seven elegant personal essays, she explores undiscovered facets of this seemingly hostile environment. With eloquence, passion, and insight, she describes and reflects on the relationship between the land, history, and people and makes this underappreciated region less barren for those who would share her journeys.

Handpainted Origami Box (Christine Gilbert)
| |
Handpainted origami box
Christine Gilbert, born in 1946, is an English and history major who started doing art in the 1990s, working in watercolor and acrylics. After a few years, she had many paintings that were done in the process of learning, which she called "failed paintings," but good rag watercolor paper is expensive, as are the paints, so she began to make origami boxes from the paintings and devised a process of coating them with paper stiffener and varnish to make them stronger. She still does this with paintings that turn out "not good enough." The boxes often turn out quite charming and can be hung on a wall or even turned into clocks. Christine has a studio with four other artists in South Austin on Thornton Road and a web page. She also writes poetry and is working on a family history.
