Widowhood Happens is crisply written in a journalistic style, presenting various methods of dealing with widowhood and widower hood. I learned that there are psychological and spiritual support groups and workshops. Garrison also presents legal, medical and practical information, cautioning that laws differ from state to state and stating that the ideal time for making funeral arrangements is before the fact, or with a friend or relative.
This easily read "how-to" book contains many stories of widows ranging in religion, profession, economic status. Many of the stories are about women who are prematurely widowed and have small children. Garrison also has the courage to discuss one widow for whom life became happier after her husband died. Ideally, Widowhood Happens should be read before one becomes a widow or widower, but I am not sure many would choose to pick this up until they felt a need.
Gene Garrison writes an interesting book on a subject many of us will encounter.
